Who Qualifies for the Attic Insulation Rebate?

Wondering whether your home qualifies for the Home Renovation Savings attic-insulation rebate?

Eligibility depends on more than your attic’s insulation. The program also considers homeownership, primary heating source, electricity connection, property type and previous attic-rebate participation.

Spray-Tech Insulation is an approved contractor for the Enbridge Home Renovation Savings Program’s Attic Stream. We help homeowners in Ottawa and the surrounding communities review their proposed upgrades and understand the next steps.

Here are the main requirements to check before starting a project.

You Must Own the Home

You must own the home where the insulation upgrade will take place. Tenants cannot apply as the homeowner. If you own more than one property, each property may qualify separately, provided it meets the program’s eligibility requirements.

Your Primary Heating Source and Utility Connection Matter

The program has two main heating pathways:

Primary heating source

Utility requirement

Natural gas furnace or boiler

The home must be primarily heated by Enbridge-supplied natural gas, with an active Enbridge Gas account

Electricity, oil, propane or wood

The home must have an electricity account connected to Ontario’s IESO-controlled grid through an eligible local electricity utility

You do not necessarily need natural gas heating to qualify. However, having a gas stove, fireplace or water heater does not by itself establish eligibility through the natural-gas pathway. Your home must be primarily heated by an eligible Enbridge-supplied natural gas furnace or boiler.

If your home uses more than one heating system, tell us about all of them so the primary heating source can be reviewed correctly.

Special Rules Apply to Cornwall Electric Customers

Cornwall Electric customers do not meet the Ontario electricity-grid requirement for homes primarily heated with electricity, propane, oil or wood. However, a Cornwall Electric customer may qualify through the natural-gas pathway if the home is primarily heated by an Enbridge-supplied natural gas furnace or boiler and meets all other requirements.

If you live in Cornwall or a nearby community, have your electricity provider and heating information available when discussing eligibility. Your location alone does not determine whether your home qualifies.

Your Home Must Be an Eligible Property Type

Eligible housing types include:

  • Single-detached homes.

  • Semi-detached homes.

  • Row homes.

  • Townhomes, excluding stacked townhomes.

  • Mobile homes on permanent foundations.

Ineligible property types include:

  • Stacked townhomes.

  • Multi-unit residential buildings.

  • Newly built homes occupied for less than six months before the application.

If your home was recently occupied, contact us to confirm the six-month occupancy requirement and current property-eligibility rules before proceeding.

What If Your Home Has a Basement Apartment or Secondary Suite?

Tell us about any basement apartment, in-law suite or other secondary unit before proceeding.

A home with a secondary suite must have centralized heating and the whole attic upgraded. Homes originally built as single-family homes and later converted may qualify; homes built as multi-family properties do not.

We can review the details and seek clarification where needed.

Your Insulation Upgrade Must Meet the Requirements

For a standard attic, the rebate categories apply to starting insulation levels of R-35 or less, with an upgrade to at least R-50.

The maximum standard-attic rebates are:

  • Up to $1,250 when upgrading from R-12 or less to at least R-50.

  • Up to $1,000 when upgrading from greater than R-12 through R-25 to at least R-50.

  • Up to $800 when upgrading from greater than R-25 through R-35 to at least R-50.

Rebates are capped at 50% of the eligible project cost after tax, up to the applicable maximum. Flat roofs and cathedral ceilings have separate requirements and maximum rebate amounts. The program also requires 100% of the total roof-assembly area, including inaccessible areas to be upgraded. Your contractor must review the existing conditions before confirming the proposed work.

Previous Attic-Insulation Rebates Can Affect Eligibility

The program restricts previous attic-insulation rebate participation.

To qualify, the property must meet the requirements concerning previous participation in or receipt of attic-insulation incentives through Enbridge Gas, Government of Ontario or Save on Energy programs.

If your property has already received an attic-insulation rebate, do not assume another top-up will qualify. Tell us which program was involved and what work was completed so eligibility can be checked before proceeding.

A previous rebate for a different home improvement does not automatically disqualify the property.

You Must Use a Participating Insulation Contractor

The upgrade must be completed through a participating insulation contractor. DIY installations do not qualify under this stream.

Although a home energy assessment is not required, you must pre-register through the program website, complete an in-home visit with a participating contractor and return signed terms before eligible work begins.

Contact a participating contractor before starting work. Do not assume that insulation already installed can be submitted for a rebate afterward.

Your Project Must Meet the Program Timelines

Installation must be completed by November 30, 2026. The contractor must submit the installation information and supporting documents by December 31, 2026.

Confirm current rebate availability and timelines before booking. An installation date alone does not establish eligibility, and applications remain subject to program review and approval.

What Information Should You Have Ready?

To help us review your project, please have the following available:

  • Your address or postal code.

  • Your primary heating source.

  • Your electricity provider.

  • Your home type.

  • Details of any secondary suite.

  • Information about previous attic-insulation rebates.

  • Anything you know about the existing insulation.

You do not need to know your attic’s exact insulation level before contacting us. Our team can explain what needs to be reviewed and what documents are required.
